Each with a tapering bowl mounted with a scalloped silver rim, on a turned baluster stem and a moulded foot.

'Loving cup' is the name given to large standing cups used for drinking the health of others at gatherings. According to Pinto, such cups are typically between 7 and 11 inches high, making this pair unusually large examples. (Edward H. Pinto, ‘Treen and Other Wooden Bygones’ (Bell & Hyman Ltd., London, 1979, p. 39).

A cup of similar size and date is illustrated in Owen Evan-Thomas, Domestic Utensils of Wood, (1992), pl. 18 and was included in the sale of Jonathan Levi's collection 'Treen for the Table' at Christie's South Kensington, 8 November 2006, lot 176. Another comparable cup, formerly in the Tony Robinson Collection of Treen Drinking Vessels sold at Christie's South Kensington, 22 November 2016, lot 291.
