Johnstone & Jeanes:
Johnstone & Jeanes were Victorian English cabinet makers who specialised in fine furniture made from the highest quality timbers and materials. The firm was founded in London in 1832 as Johnstone, Jupe & Co by John Johnstone and Robert Jupe. Together they made notable advancements in furniture making, such as producing the Jupe table, a mechanical extending circular dining table. The pair fell out and in 1842, Johnstone partnered with Jeanes and began trading at 67 New Bond Street, London. The company operated for forty years and continued to make developments in furniture design and ergonomics. Their designs favoured the Chippendale and Sheraton furniture styles, and they exhibited widely at major shows of the age, such as the Great Exhibition of 1851 and the Paris Universal Exposition of 1878.

The furniture of Johnstone & Jeanes became with popular with royalty and the firm developed a clientele of wealthy English and Americans. They created furniture for Buckingham Palace ballroom and Windsor Castle and feature prominently in the Royal Collection and the V&A Museum.

Lighthouses:
The 19th Century was the golden age of lighthouses in Britain. The rapid growth of transatlantic trade combined with the inherent danger of navigating rocky coastline led to programme of lighthouse building across the British Isles. Technological advancements in lighting and construction, such as those developed by Robert Stevenson, led to lighthouses famously being built in once impossible locations such as the Flannan Isles and Muckle Flugga. Stevenson, great-grandfather to the author Robert Louis Stevenson, founded a dynasty of lighthouse builders, who monopolised the construction of lighthouses in Scotland for a century. During the Victorian era, lighthouse keeping was seen as more of a calling than a job. It was deeply respected and vital for the safety of entire communities and industries. With lighthouses being a source of fascination and pride, it is unsurprising the Johnstone & Jeanes decided to design a door porter in the shape of one of these new novelties.
