A large scale magnifying glass, the lens surrounded by a moulded circular border, with a turned handle terminating in a brass ring for hanging.

Hand-held gallery glasses (large magnifying glasses) such as this one were popular during the Regency period and were held at arm's length by the connoisseur or collector to view objects from a considerable distance such as paintings hung high up in densely-hung picture galleries, standing sculptures or books on the upper shelves of a library.
